Avian leukosis viruses (ALV) provoke a variety of trasmissible bening and malign tumoral diseases affecting birds. Chickens are affected by six subgroups of ALV designs A, B, C, D, E and J of more recent world dissemination. These viruses are potential contaminants of live vaccines used in poultry. In order to research the presence of DNA from ALVs as contaminants of viral commercial vaccines to be used in poultry, different Marek´s disease vaccines were screened by a reported polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay designed to detect all subgroups of ALVs. DNA samples extracted from seven vaccines were submitted to PCR using primers for a conserved region of env gene of HPRS-103. ALV sequences were detected in seven samples (100%). The methodology employed... |

The degradation in the quality of silver eel and their health could have been a major factor in the collapse of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) population. However, the health status of the spawners has been poorly studied until now. This study evaluated the quality of migrant male silver eels from four Mediterranean habitats in France presenting different degrees of contamination: Canet-Saint-Nazaire, Salses-Leucate and Bages-Sigean lagoons and La Berre River. We considered pathogens including Anguillicoloides crassus and EVEX virus and the concentration of chemical contaminants including PCBs, OCs and heavy metals. Our study results revealed different patterns of pollution and infection in the four habitats, with high individual variability. No... |

The increasing amounts of heavy metals entering aquatic environments can result in high accumulation levels of these contaminants in fish and their consumers, which pose a serious risk to ecosystems and human health. We investigated the concentrations of mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr), and lead (Pb) in muscle, liver, and spleen tissues of Pseudoplatystoma corruscans specimens collected from two sites on the Paraopeba River, Brazil. The level of heavy metals concentrations in the tissues was often higher in viscera (i.e. liver and spleen) than in muscle, and thus, the viscera should not be considered for human consumption. Correlations between metal concentrations and fish size were not significant. Although the levels of muscle... |

Within the framework of the study on cup oyster breeding in the Arcachon Basin (IFREMER's SURGIBA Programme, co-financed by Europe, the Regional Council of Aquitaine, the Regional Council of Gironde and the Arcachon Basin's inter-communal Syndicate), some pesticides have been researched in the main waterways and in the waters of several of the Basin's zones (Figure 1), during the summer months (June to September) from 1999 to 2003 inclusive (Auby and Maurer, 2004). The presence of a certain number of molecules, mainly from herbicides, was found in the waters and it has generally been possible to identify their source. Certain substances come from agricultural uses or park maintenance; others are from nautical sources (anti-fouling paint for protecting the... |

The oyster culture basin of Marennes - Oléron is characterized by the tastiness of its oysters and the good quality of its waters, and thus of its shellfish. On that account, the quasi-totality of the production areas are ranked A for non-burrowing shellfishes, thus confirming the privileged character of the basin. This microbiological and chemical quality contributing to the reputation of the basin's shellfish farms needs to be preserved. In this purpose, the Regional Shellfish Culture Section of Marennes - Oléron (SRC) approached the Ifremer in order to continue the monitoring of the microbiological quality carried out on different production areas susceptible to be affected by some bacteriological contaminations leading to a deterioration of the... |

Estuaries and coastal areas are often subjected to much pollution, including pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) produced by anthropic activities. Bay of Marennes-Oléron is an estuarine coastal zone in which there is a high level of aquacultural production and this has adverse effects in aquatic organisms. In fact, PAHs, which are widely spread throughout aquatic ecosystems, have a low polarity and so there is a clear tendency to bioaccumulate in marine organisms (1). The harmful effects of such contaminants on the organism's immune system, leading to a decreased resistance to pathogens, is a relatively new area of research and it still poorly understood. The aim of the present work was to detect the impact in vivo of PAHs on the immune... |

Seabirds ingest plastic particles floating on the surface of the world's oceans. The birds can ingest plastic particles that they mistakenly identify as prey items. Alternatively, plastics can be taken up in the stomach contents of prey species. Plastic is often passed from parents to chicks in regurgitated food. In this study, individual petrels and albatrosses brought in by the tide onto Ilha Comprida beach between January 2000 and December 2002 were collected. Ilha Comprida, a barrier island in southern São Paulo, Brazil, was traversed by car along a transect of 70 kilometers. A total of 110 birds of 10 species were collected and 64.54% had plastic particles in their stomach. Frequencies of occurrence were Macronectes giganteus (64.28%), Thalassarche... |

In January and February 2002, the presence of certain agricultural pesticides throughout the coastline of the Caribbean island of Martinique was investigated. The tropical climate of the French West Indies is suitable for banana production, which requires intensive use of pesticides. An inventory of all pesticides used on the island (compounds and tonnage) was compiled. Surveys and analyses revealed the presence of pesticides in the plumes of seven rivers. The organochlorine chlordecone and metabolites of aldicarb were detected at nearly all of the monitored sites, even though the use of chlordecone has been prohibited since 1993. Two triazines (ametryn and simazine) were also identified. The concentrations of carbamates and triazines detected in the water... |

Tebuthiuron (N-[5-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl]-N,N-dimethylurea) is a phenylurea herbicide used in sugar cane culture for the pre- and post-emergence control of weeds [1,2]. Analysis of tebuthiuron (Figure 1) and of other phenylurea herbicides in environmental samples can be performed by HPLC [3-10], or by gas chromatography using selective detectors such as nitrogen-prosphorus detector (NPD), eletron-capture detector (ECD), or a mass spectrometer (MS) [11-16]. Although Loh et al [17] reported that the use of temperatures above 280oC permits quantitative tebuthiuron breakdown, thus permitting the analysis of the products of decomposition formed, methods based on gas chromatography usually involve a derivatization step to permit analysis of... |

High abundances of juvenile fish in certain ports suggest they might provide alternative nursery habitats for several species. To further investigate this possibility, post-settlement growth, metal uptake and body condition were estimated in 127 juveniles of two seabream species, collected in 2014–15, inside and outside the highly polluted ports of the Bay of Toulon. This showed that differences in local pollution levels (here in Hg, Cu, Pb and Zn) are not consistently mirrored within fish flesh. Muscle metal concentrations, below sanitary thresholds for both species, were higher in ports for Cu, Pb and V only. Otherwise, fish muscle composition principally differed by species or by year. Juvenile growth and condition were equivalent at all sites. Higher... |

The construction of ports has caused substantial habitat destruction in coastal areas previously used as nursery grounds by many fish species, with consequences to fish stocks. These artificial coastal areas might provide alternative nursery habitats for several species for juvenile fish abundances and growth in ports, although their contribution to adult stocks had never been estimated. The variability of otolith composition in the juveniles of two Diplodus species was investigated in three contrasting port areas and two adjacent coastal juvenile habitats of the Bay of Toulon (northwestern Mediterranean) in order to determine the possible use of otolith fingerprints as natural tags for the identification of juvenile fishes in ports. The global accuracy of... |

Milk may represent an important source of infectious agents to hospitalized pediatric patients. To describe the bacterial microflora isolated from the hands, stools, pharynx of all workers at milk kitchens in pediatric hospitals in the city of Salvador, Brazil, as well as in the formulas prepared by them, we carried out this cross-sectional study with all 91 workers from the 20 milk kitchens of all the public and private hospitals in Salvador, Brazil. Hand and pharynx swabs and stool samples were collected from all workers, as well as samples of the milk and formulas delivered by the kitchens. All samples were cultured for the detection of pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria. Pathogenic bacteria were isolated from 20 (22.0%) and 8 (8.8%) cultures of the... |

With the growth in the transgenic market, fast and economically viable methodologies are necessary for undertaking transgene detection tests, both for identification of contamination in seeds and in grain. Seeds from commercial conventional GNZ 2004, and transgenic VT-Pro (MON89034), Roundup Ready (NK603) and Herculex (TC1507) maize cultivars were used. In order to simulate different levels of contamination, the transgenic seeds were mixed with conventional seeds at levels of 0.2%, 0.4%, 1.0% and 1.6% for VT-Pro, and 0.2%, 0.5%, 0.8% and 1.2% for Roundup Ready and Herculex. The lateral flow membrane strip test was performed in the whole seed, endosperm and embryo. For evaluation of the specificity of the technique in detection of the TC1507 event by means... |
